Zenbe Sakura
The Zenbeizakura: Gujo City's 300-Year-Old Natural Monument Cherry Tree
Designated a Natural Monument by Gujo City, the Zenbeizakura is an Edohigan cherry tree estimated to be 300 years old.
It's renowned as one of Japan's largest single cherry trees standing without supports.
While its magnificent form drew admiration for years, a major supporting branch tragically broke during heavy rains in May 2021.
However, the tree shows incredible resilience, with new buds sprouting beneath the break.
To find it, walk along the river from the south side of Michi-no-Eki Meiho and head up past the row of cherry trees – it's about a ten-minute walk.
