Kera kabuki

Kira Kabuki is performed every year in September as part of the festivities at Kira Hakusan Shrine in the Meihō Kira district.

At Kera kabuk, locals enjoy the traditional atmosphere of watching plays while relaxing with their packed lunches. Kira Kabuki features a wide range of performances, from historical plays to domestic dramas, with passionate and energetic performances being its hallmark.

About the Activities of Kera kabuki

Kera kabuki, which had been discontinued since 1988, was revived in 2005 as part of the Kira Hakusan Shrine festival celebrations. Since then, regular performances have been held. In 2020 and 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the performances were in danger of being canceled, but a groundbreaking local kabuki video streaming project was launched, with performances broadcast on YouTube and local cable TV. (In 2022, the performance was canceled.) Since 2016, efforts have been underway to convert the old Meikata Elementary School auditorium, a designated important cultural property of Gujo City, into a kabuki theater. In 2023, the “Kira-za” was unveiled with a performance, and in 2024, a grand opening performance was held.
